Wow… Today has been one truly awesome day. If you aren’t INTO cars, then there is no reason to read this. Originally for Saturday (Today) I had a full day of computer tutoring, network help, formats and so on planned, along with four clients to visit. By Friday eve, they had all rescheduled there appoints. So, it looked like I would be stuck reformatting/fixing/upgrade a computer at the office. Well boy did my luck turn around. I was invited (by my father) to go on a private tour of Ron Pratte’s Garage. (He is the gentlemen who bought the first Shelby for 5.5 mil this year, and the GM bus for 4.5mil last year at Barret-Jackson).

Little background on Ron Pratte’s Money
He didn’t come into family money, and he didn’t win the lottery.
He owned and operated Pratte Development Company, Inc., one of the nation’s largest wood framing and concrete foundation companies and just so happened to sell out (exclusive deal) with Pulte Homes at the right time.

Well to pretty much sum it up I got to spend about 3 hours in this guys, 40,000 SQ FT warehouse and drool over his cars. Man there was so much, 3 hours wasn’t nearly enough time.

When we asked Mr. Pratte, if he did tours he replied that he was asked at least 5 times a week and that he only did this for his friends. He said at one point they had consider have a open house and charging people a few dollars and then donating it to a charity, however his Insurance company said that his premiums would go way up, and I guess they figured out the cost of it would be too much. That said it was really nice of our client to invite my father to this deal. All together there were just under about 50 people there, including 3 or 4 big wigs from Barret-Jackson there.

So, that was my car day.

After consulting Newegg, I opened up the Intel E8400 box. As you can see in the pictures one side of the plastic was dented and one of the hold downs for the heat sink was a few millimeters from being bent. Other then a little smudge, the Intel chip was fine. Next I opened and installed the Intel BOXDG35EC motherboard. I found the cables box had shifted and smashed a few of the documents, nothing major, just annoying.  20 minutes later I had the remaining hardware installed and approximately 2 hours later the hard drive was  reformatted  (Western Digital 640GB, also purchased at Newegg.com) and windows was installed. From there on it was piece of cake.

In the last photo (I believe) you can see the shipping labels and it is obvious that tape was added to at least the bottom of the package after the shipping label was attached. Not sure what to think of this. Any ways as far as I am concerned the issue is now resolved. The processor works great, my friend is happy and newegg is awesome. In the future I will do my best to bypass UPS (it is hard to pass up free 3 day shipping).

I am helping a friend re-build his computer. Computer needs/needed to be built/setup ready to go this A.S.A.P. I am headed out of town at the end of the week and he is in need.Anywho, on to the dilemma at hand.

I ordered all of the parts from NewEgg.com (As always). Order was placed Wednesday (7.30.2008) Morning (9AM-ISH).
The estimated delivery was 3 days. I opted to pay for 2-Day air and rush processing.
Everything looked fine until Thursday when the order still had not been picked up. I figured maybe UPS systems were updating still or even down (sh*t happens you know). Well come Thursday evening the package status was updated to be delivered on 8/4/2008. I was a little upset, but understand delays and what not happened. I sent a request on live chat for some assistance. I was trying to gain information if this was a shipping error? or if my Rush processing didn’t take. The representative informed me there was a delay with UPS. And would be happy to refund the shipping fees. I don’t understand how Newegg can do this, but I am not going to argue with free shipping (even if its a few days late). Well any ways the shipment showed up today. The box was pretty smashed, at first I was not too worried for these things happen. Upon inspeciton however, things were a little out of place.

The mother board box was exposed. The Intel CPU (E8400) box was smashed, to the point that the very fine bit of tape that lies on the Intel seal was peeling off. All the bubbles on one side of the DVD/CD OEM drive were popped.

I really do not have a problem with the motherboard box or the DVD/CD drive. The thing that errks me is the CPU box.

I can physically see the cpu is not smashed but I am unaware of any actual damage that could have been done to the cpu or the heat sink.

So my question is how should I proceed?

The package was already accepted from UPS (I was not present at the time).
Apart from the box being smashed. The cpu doesn’t look to be damaged.

What would you do?

Take in mind I need to get this thing up and running before I leave.
